Pack your clothes, and then remove half of them before closing your suitcase. Travel light. Clothes are cheap, plentiful, and of suitable cotton material. A set of T-shirts and matching shorts will not cost more than USD 3, and they make good gifts for the folks back home.

Our favorite clothing stores include Osh Kosh, Cool Stuff, Kuta Kidz, Kids a Go Go, Kahuna Kids and Quicksilver, Billabong, Surfer Girl and Stussy. Body and Soul has a factory outlet selling kids clothes on Jalan Raya Legian. For cheapies, we like the market at Jln Legian and of course the Sukawati Market on your way to Ubud.

My kids carry their own knapsacks, which we fill with a water bottle, snacks, and a change of clothing. Let them bring a favorite book, coloring pencils, to read and work on while waiting. I also give my 10 year olds a cheap disposable camera to take her own photographs of the trip. Develop the film for her scrapbook.

Drink only bottled water. AQUA and Vit are popular local brands and are available in local convenience stores. The most popular are Starmart, Circle K and AlphaMart. Some are open 24 hours a day. Use a common sense approach and you will be fine.

Sunscreen! The imported brands are expensive in Bali. Bring them from home. A torch. Don't forget new batteries. They are available of course, but nothing beats having one in the knapsack at all times. Don't bring your mosquito repellant. The local brand Autan is cheap, easily available and works!!!

Most medication can be bought at the local pharmacy. The popular ones are Kimia Farma and Healthcare. Just look for any APOTHEK. You can easily get Aspirin, Diapet, Bodrexin, and any other medication cheaply. In an emergency, most Westerners will seek medical attention at SOS. You will find it at Jalan Bypass, near the huge roundabout at Planet Hollywood.

Some people swear by a stroller. It is difficult to rent one here. Although you will not use it to walk around much, it works great as a place for the kids to sleep in at restaurants, art galleries and on the beach.

Bring a portable DVD player if you have one. Most hotels will have a TV that you can plug into DVDs are plentiful. Jln Legian Utara has the best selection. Most tourist centers will have at least one store that will stock you up for about Rp 7000 a disc. Check them for quality before leaving. Be safe. Use your common sense. Hydrate. Enjoy.
